2014 Buick LaCrosse Earns Five-Star NHTSA Safety Score

The 2014 Buick LaCrosse has received the highest possible 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

“Safety is one of the pillars of the Buick brand and our flagship continues to echo this essential element to our customers,” said Jeff Yanssens, chief engineer of the LaCrosse. “Not only do we offer advanced safety technologies in the 2014 LaCrosse, but we designed and engineered the core of the car to perform well with respect to crash safety.”

Employing many advanced technologies – including the use of camera and radar – to help avoid crashes, the refreshed full-size sedan offers one of the most comprehensive collections of standard and available safety features in the segment. Helping the driver identify potential crash situations, visual, and audible or where available, seat vibration alerts are initially used by these systems. If a crash threat appears imminent, some systems can even intervene and apply the brakes.
The available safety and convenience features include:
  • Safety Alert Seat – A patented General Motors’ technology, the driver’s seat works with many of the advanced safety features, providing seat vibration pulses indicating the direction of a potential crash threat.
  • Automatic Collision Preparation – Radar technology detects a possible crash threat and alerts the driver. If the system detects that the driver does not apply the brakes, this feature intervenes to automatically trigger the brakes in an effort to reduce crash damage.
  • Forward Collision Alert – If the camera technology detects a possible crash threat, the system will send an alert.
  • Full-speed-range Adaptive Cruise Control – Radar technology senses traffic in front of the LaCrosse to adjust vehicle speed, including bringing the vehicle to a complete stop and accelerating again upon driver request.
  • Lane Departure Warning – A camera-based lane detection system can warn the driver of unsignaled lane changes. The camera, mounted near the inside rearview mirror, identifies lane markings, and provides alerts.
  • Lane Change Alert – Under most driving conditions, the system helps to inform the driver of fast-approaching vehicles in the next lane that are up to 230 feet (70 meters) behind the car. The LaCrosse is one of the first vehicles to offer this technology.
  • Side Blind Zone Alert – Using radar sensors on both sides of the vehicle, the system scans for other vehicles in the blind zone areas of the LaCrosse and under most driving conditions, indicates their presence with light-emitting diode, or LED-lit symbols in the outside mirrors.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert – Based on the radar sensors of side blind zone alert, it can warn the driver of vehicles in traffic when backing out of a parking spot – including angled parking. Visual, and audible or available seat vibration alerts are triggered if moving vehicles are detected.
  • Rear Vision Camera – In reverse, the camera provides a view of the area behind the LaCrosse, shown on the display in the center stack infotainment system.
Eight standard air bags complement the advanced, crash-avoidance technologies of the LaCrosse. These include rear-seat thorax air bags designed to protect the upper torso.
Enabling greater vehicle control, the LaCrosse also features StabiliTrak electronic stability control, all-speed traction control, and four-wheel disc brakes with Intelligent Brake Assist on the four-channel antilock brake system.

The safety and security of OnStar, which links to existing emergency service providers, is standard for six months. It uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of crash. OnStar service also offers IntelliLink mobile apps, which provide vehicle information and OnStar services via the customer’s compatible smartphone. Visit Onstar.com for details and system limitations.

Should Dogs Wear Seat Belts?

Dogs love to go for rides in the car and we love bring our pets with us EVERYWHERE these days. In a recent AAA survey, 31% of drivers admitted to being distracted at some point by a dog climbing into their lap when driving. When you are operating a vehicle, having an unrestrained dog aboard is dangerous for a variety of reasons:

-Roaming pets are distracting to drivers

-Driving with your dog on your lap is dangerous (duh)

-Dogs in accidents are dangerous to everyone in the car because they turn into flying projectile in the event of an accident

-It’s the Law (kind of) –States like Arizona, Maine, Connecticut and New Jersey issue fines up to $1,000 if a dog is in the driver’s lap

Verdict: Yes, our canine friends should be strapped in. But don't take our word for it, watch this video and decide for yourself: http://abcn.ws/12aXn09

Happy 110th Birthday Buick — Your Future Looks Bright

It was a rather quiet event. Understated if you will. But on May 19th, Buick celebrated its 110th birthday.

The historic “Doctor’s Brand” has had a long and storied history, which, honestly, I think is the best kind to have. It has gone from a gutsy independent car maker to one of the pillars of a fledgling General Motors to a disposable afterthought and then back to a driving force in GM’s recovery.

When you get to be 110, you’ve been around the block a couple of times, you’re a survivor. However, merely surviving isn’t always enough. So how much of a future does this premium brand really have? More than you might expect.

Just a few years ago, Buick was on the chopping block, ready to become the next brand discarded by GM. Its once loyal base of customers had migrated to other brands and its lineup languished. Doctors didn’t drive Buicks, they drove a Lexus or a BMW. Buick could easily have become Saturn, Hummer, Pontiac or Saab.

But one group still saw Buick as youthful, exciting and holding a rich history: The Chinese. They remember their last emperor riding around in a Buick. They remember Dr. Sun Yat-sen, China’s first provisional president, and Zhou Enlai, China’s premier, in stately Buicks. And as the country’s economy took off, a lot of freshly minted middle classers wanted Buicks.

Today four out of every five Buicks sold are sold in China. In April, Buick sold 66,923 vehicles in China. Had it sold that many in America, it would have been the seventh largest brand, right between Nissan and Hyundai. Last year, Buick broke its worldwide sales record, selling 895,000 vehicles. It’s the fourth year in a row that Buick has set a new record.

The Buick Riviera Concept car shown in China this year. A version of the Riviera could be sold in China, but GM officials have not confirmed that.

Given new life in Asia, Buick has used that muscle to reinvent itself in America for the past five years.

Around that time, Buick’s executives in America told me they had a single goal: beat the Asian luxury vehicles. Cadillac would go after the Europeans, and Buick was supposed to take on Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti. It was an interesting strategy, giving Buick a clear identity and goal.

It’s modern day revival came from the most unlikely of places: a large crossover called the Enclave. It was an incredibly quiet vehicle filled with luxury features. And it attracted younger families to the brand. It proved that understated luxury was back in vogue and if you could convince someone to go into a dealership, they would be impressed. The Enclave made vehicles like the Lucerne feel outdated as soon as it rolled off of the assembly line.

But there were still problems with the brand’s reputation. In the shallow world of automotive consumerism, reputation is reality, no matter what the truth. Think old people drive Buicks? Then the brand is never even considered. Your neighbor has a Lexus? So do you. And even to this day, Buick’s reputation is on the mend in America.
But Buick continues to move in the right direction, not by telling everyone it has great cars, but by showing them. With each new addition in the Buick family, the vehicles are getting better.

After the Enclave, the LaCrosse arrived with more Enclave qualities than not. It was clearly part of the new generation influenced by the cars being sold in China. Both have firm but luxurious rides. They shy toward more quiet than more sporty and that’s perfectly alright. Too many cars have moved into the semi sporty segment, which means it is neither sporty nor luxurious, kind of like all season tires. Some people just want a smooth ride. They like being wrapped in a cocoon of luxury and reliable performance. If people really demanded rear-wheel drive performance vehicles Ford Mustangs would outsell Toyota Camrys. They don’t.

Today’s Buicks look sharp but are never over the top. They also cost less than their 2013 Buick Verano direct competitors, making them a deal. And in today’s economy, everyone is looking for a deal.

More recently, Buick introduced the compact Verano and stayed true to the brand’s ideals. It’s stylish but not flamboyant. It’s crazy quiet but still has solid performance and a good ride.

Perhaps the best Buick is the one that feels like a square peg in a round lineup: The Buick Regal. Personally, I like this car. It’s an Opel Insigna with a different badge. The GS model is wicked fast, has a great manual gearbox and handles as well as a 3 Series. But it feels too sporty for the brand. Buick didn’t ruin its reputation overnight, so it’s not going to get it back with the first generation of one vehicle.

Now even the tiny Encore is doing well in the market as one of the hottest selling vehicles in its segment. In the short time I drove one, I learned it’s fun around town and has a certain go-kart appeal to it. It’s also roomy inside but still urban small, making it easy to park. Stature can be measured in many ways and the Encore has a lot of potential. I don’t know how it will perform over the long term, but it can certainly bring new customers to the brand. And it should.

Furthermore, Buick has quietly shown it can be a technology leader. It’s eAssist
2013 Buick Encore system has been one of the least discussed hybrid systems around, and it is ground breaking in how well it works. While many carmakers have chosen to create horrible start/stop systems that sputter and clunk, eAssist smoothly restarts the car, allows for very low speed electric drive and uses regenerative braking for the battery pack in the trunk. It’s the one hybrid (albeit mild hybrid) that is offered as the base vehicle. I often wonder if some Buick owners with eAssist even realize they’re driving a hybrid.

Meanwhile, Buick continues to roll along. Sales are up 23 percent this year, after three years of continued growth. There have been a lot of ups and downs over the past 110 years for the brand, but right now, Buick is doing a lot of things right.

The key to its success this time has been the same to its success in the past — build good vehicles and people will start to notice. Offer them for less than the competition while offering more content and more people will notice. Then do it again with the next vehicle. Repeat.

Happy Birthday Buick, even at 110, your future looks bright.

GM 5.3L V8 Makes 355 HP, 23 MPG in Silverado, Sierra

V

Base pricing was also revealed by the brands, with the Sierra starting at $25,085, and the Silverado starting as $24,585. Moving up into a double cab model will cost $28,610 in the Silverado, and $29,110 for Sierra, while the top end crew cabs will start at $32,710 for Silverado and $33,210 for Sierra. Built into the overall price is a two-year, 24,000-mile standard scheduled maintenance program, which includes four free maintenance visits. To opt for the 5.3-liter V8, customers will only have to shell out an extra $895, and Chevy says that they expect 3/4 Silverados to be powered by that engine.

A 4.3-liter V6 and a 6.2-liter V8 will also be offered in GM’s trucks, but performance numbers are still unreleased.

The rear-wheel drive 5.3-liter V8 is rated at 16/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined, while the 4×4 model gets a 16/22/18 mpg rating. GM was quick to point out that the fuel economy of the new middle of the road 5.3-liter V8 beats out the Ford F-150 EcoBoost V6 numbers by 1 mpg for both the rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models. GM’s 5.3-liter V8 still doesn’t beat Ram’s 25 mpg highway rating for the 3.6-liter V6 mated to the eight-speed transmission, but that isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison  GM’s six-cylinder numbers, on the other hand, might be good enough to best the Ram V6.

To achieve these fuel economy numbers, GM fitted its new EcoTec3 engines with cylinder deactivation, variable valve timing and direct injection. All three engines are fixed to a six-speed automatic transmission, though GM execs admit that an updated transmission is in the works. It will arrive later on in the product’s life cycle, and is likely to incorporate more gears.

With the 5.3-liter GM engine at 355 hp and 383 lb-of torque however, the F-150 EcoBoost wins the power game, as it is rated at 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Ford’s smaller V8, the 5.0-liter, is a closer match to GM’s new 5.3-liter V8, and beats it by 5 hp but lacks 3 lb-ft of torque. In comparison to the Ram, the 5.3-liter GM engine beats out Chrysler’s middle of the road 4.7-liter V8 by about 40 hp and 50 lb-ft.

GM says that double cab rear-wheel drive models equipped with the available max towing package will pull a max 11,500 lbs., an extra 200 lbs over the Ford F-150′s max tow rating, putting the Sierra and Silverado at the top of the heap when it comes to hauling trailers. In a conference call about the new pickups, GM admits that the towing capacity numbers do not conform to J2807 standard, set by the industry along with the Society of Automotive Engineers. As of now, only Toyota’s half-tons fully conform to the standard.

Car Tip of the Week: Don’t forget the PCV valve

V

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve is an emissions control device on older cars — checks your service manual to see if your car has one. The valve recirculates partially burned gases from the engine’s crankcase to the combustion chamber. Important to a properly functioning engine, the valve should be changed every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or as specified in your owner’s manual. In addition to helping you get the most from a tank of gasoline, it helps to prevent the buildup of harmful sludge and corrosion. When replacing your PCV valve, be sure you use the correct one or you may damage your engine.

Car Tip of the Week: Avoid overfilling your crankcase with oil

V

Don’t overfill your engine crankcase with oil. If you do, the oil can rise into the crankshaft, where air bubbles will get churned into the oil. Your oil pump can’t do a good job of circulating oil with air bubbles. The result can be overheating and stress on engine components. Overfilling can also foul your sparkplugs. In fact, overfilling is a bad idea with all automotive fluids.

Car Tip of the Week: Top off your brake fluid

Check brake fluid monthly. Wipe dirt from the master cylinder lid before you open it. If you need fluid, add the type recommended by your car’s maker. Never substitute other fluids, such as transmission or power-steering fluid. And don’t use brake fluid from a previously opened container. Once exposed to air, brake fluid absorbs moisture and contaminates easily.

Car Tip of the Week: Beware the wet thumb

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

V

If you top off your tires at a service station, check to see if there’s moisture coming from the air pump. Simply depress the pin inside the inflator valve with your thumbnail. If your thumb gets wet, advise the station manager that his tanks need to be drained and go to a different station. Moisture, trapped inside a tire, can cause pressure variations and corrode rims.

Car Tip of the Week: Secure loads to avoid dents and scratches

Vv

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

The beginning of the end for the finish on many cars and trucks — and for wagon and hatchback interiors for that matter — is an improperly stowed load. Invest in the appropriate racks for bicycles, cargo, and luggage. A good trick to keep tall objects from sliding around in a pick-up truck bed is to use a shower curtain rod (or two) as a brace. Just push the cargo against the front wall of the truck bed and install the rod behind it. Twist to secure. Cargo nets will also help keep objects from banging around and damaging a truck bed.

Don’t add water to the windshield washer reservoir. It won’t clean as well as washer fluid, and it may freeze in cold weather and damage the system. Don’t try to run your windshield washer system once you suspect there’s no more fluid in the tank, or you may damage the washer fluid pump.

The same upholstery cleaners you use at home can be used on your car’s upholstery. Use them sparingly, however, to avoid saturating the fabric. Use a clean cloth to wipe away the foam. 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra show all their sides in Detroit

There could hardly be more riding on the next-generation General Motors full-size pickup trucks, so the automaker has wisely made sure to have a selection of different models on hand at the Detroit Auto Show to show off. The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra were both officially introduced last month at a stand-alone reveal, and now they'll be on display for the public to see in various body configurations and trim levels.

The Silverado LTZ Crew Cab and Sierra SLE Extended Cab are aimed at providing more of a high-end pickup experience, while the Silverado LT Z71 Extended Cab and Sierra SLT Z71 Crew Cab should have off-road fans scouting out their favorite trails. The crew cab trucks won't go into production until sometime during the second quarter of this year – with other bodystyles coming later in the year – but we have plenty of live images from Detroit for you to enjoy.

Car Tip of the Week: Preserve your car during long-term storage

If you are not going to use your car for more than a month, store it properly to prevent unnecessary damage and repairs upon your return.
  • Fill the gas tank to help prevent condensation from accumulating in the gas tank. Add a fuel stabilizer and drive the car around a bit to distribute the additive to engine parts.
  • Wash and wax the car thoroughly to protect the finish.
  • Place a vapor barrier on your garage floor. A 4-mil polyethylene drop cloth will do.
  • Disengage the parking brake to help avoid brake corrosion.
  • Put the car on jack stands to take the weight of the vehicle off the wheels and tires.
  • Disconnect and remove the battery to keep it from draining. Place the battery on a trickletype charger. Or periodically drain the battery, using a small light bulb, and then recharge it with a low-volt charger.
  • Plug the tailpipe with a rag to prevent moist air from infiltrating into it.
